LiTrans Founding Director Dr. Bilal Farooq Promoted to Full Professor at TMU

The Laboratory of Innovations in Transportation (LiTrans) is thrilled to announce that our Founding Director, Dr. Bilal Farooq, has been promoted to the rank of Full Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) on May 8, 2026. This milestone is a testament to Dr. Farooq’s exceptional leadership, dedicated mentorship, and internationally recognized contributions to the future of urban mobility.

As the Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Disruptive Transportation Technologies and Services, Dr. Farooq has continuously pushed the boundaries of transportation engineering. Under his guidance, LiTrans has grown into a world-class hub for pioneering research at the intersection of engineered systems and human behaviour. From advancing multi-agent microsimulations and integrating quantum optimization into urban systems, to exploring the neurophysiological impacts of extended reality (XR) on travel behaviour and steering the transition toward sustainable electric vehicle infrastructure, his work continues to shape the smart and sustainable cities of tomorrow.

Beyond his groundbreaking research, this promotion reflects Dr. Farooq’s deep commitment to academic excellence, collaborative innovation, and the success of his students and postdoctoral researchers. His leadership within major initiatives, including co-leading the Place and Infrastructure theme of the Bridging Divides research program funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), highlights his dedication to creating accessible, efficient, and equitable transportation networks.
